Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media, public speaker and Canadian. Feminist Frequency is a channel that hosts videos, commentary and analyses of how popular culture depicts women. Anita Sarkeesian has been a blogger, critic of the media and award-winning feminist for over 10 years. Feminist Frequency is an educational non-profit website that examines female representations in narratives from popular culture. As well as working to bring awareness to the harassment and targeted attack on women and other minorities in online spaces she is determined to break the stereotypes prevalent in popular culture. Sarkeesian is a graduate in political thought and social theory at York University. She is also a highly-respected public speaking. Sarkeesian delivered speeches to the TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group. From an early age Sarkeesian was captivated by issues of gender identity and feminist thinking. While still at school in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency website. The ambitious lady planned to create an online series that examined the role of gender in games however, she was also the subject of an online campaign to harass her. She was not deterred by the harassment, the fact is that it only bolstered her desire to become an expert on media and feminism. Numerous awards have been given to her as a way of acknowledging her contributions to the field she have made. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award award-winning journalist. She was also the creator and director of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit organization that explores pop culture gender representations.
